Tucked away in her office at the salon, Selyse was on the phone with her best friend, Hilorie. Her work-from-home job paid her good money to do whatever she wanted, basically. That consisted of sending Selyse hairstyles she wanted for her trip out of the country in a few weeks. Selyse scrolled through the three different pictures, trying to decide which one she liked the most and would more than likely be styling.

“I like the tribal braids in the front with the small knee-length braids with the curly hair in the back,” she told Hilorie.

“Me too! I knew you’d choose that one. It’s gon’ take all day though.”

“Hell yes. You have a lot of hair, but I braid fast, so it shouldn’t take all day.”

Hilorie nodded her head. “You do. I’ll just come in at like five.”

“Five where?” Selyse asked incredulously, clicking back in on FaceTime.

“To the shop,” Hilorie answered with laughter in her voice.

“Not this shop, you’re not. I just be rolling over at five. Better catch me at least by seven. I can do that.”

“Guess I better take what I can get.”

Selyse chuckled. “Sure better.”

No matter how much money a client offered, or if it were her best friend, she wasn’t booking an appointment at five in the morning. No style was that serious, and if the person needed to be in that early, she’d gladly refer them to someone else. That was one of the things she loved most about being her own boss. Setting strict hours and sticking to them had saved her from catching tons of headaches.

As Hilorie talked about the resort she and her boyfriend would be staying at in Mexico, a text from Khrome came through. Immediately, Selyse’s cheeks lifted with a smile without her even knowing what it said. He’d been on her mind, and it seemed that he hit her line whenever she thought of him. He was always intentional with his conversations as well. It was never just a wyd? or dry text. Khrome made Selyse want to reply, and she loved that for the both of them because once a man couldn’t keep her interest, she was off of him and quick.

Khrome: How you doing today, beautiful? Have you eaten or need to be eaten?

Selyse grinned hard, remembering he’d said that to her on their first date. “He remembered.”

“Who?” Hilorie asked.

“Khrome. He texted me and asked if I’d eaten or needed to be.”

Hilorie grinned wide, showing off her small gap. “Whaaat! Not him getting straight to it. And look at you, just blushing.”

Selyse covered her face. “Shut up. At least he asked. You know I love a man with manners and who’s down to satisfy me.”

“Oh, I know,” Hilorie snickered. “You remind me every time I try linking you up with one of Ricky’s homeboys.”

“You heard me say manners, right? Those niggas do not have those. You got lucky.”

Hilorie sighed. “Thank goodness. Lord knows I was tired of being the strong, independent woman. I am fragile and need him to take care of everything.
